Former Florida State Seminoles football standout Steve Alford has been named the new head coach of the University of Nevada men’s basketball team, marking a major step in his coaching career. The school officially announced Alford’s hiring on Tuesday, confirming his transition from his previous role at Nevada to continue leading the Wolf Pack program.
Alford, who played football at Florida State in the late 1980s, has built an impressive coaching résumé in college basketball over the years. His coaching career includes previous stints at Iowa, New Mexico, UCLA, and Nevada, where he has led the Wolf Pack since 2019.
Following the announcement, Alford sent a heartfelt message to Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell and the entire Seminoles program, expressing his deep-rooted connection to the university. “Florida State shaped me in ways I’ll never forget,” Alford said. “Coach Norvell has done an incredible job with the program, and I’m always cheering for the Noles no matter where I go.”
Alford also encouraged the current Florida State players to embrace the journey, emphasizing hard work and perseverance. “Cherish every moment because playing for Florida State is special. Keep grinding and striving for greatness.”
Norvell responded with his own congratulatory message, praising Alford’s leadership. “Steve has always represented Florida State with class and excellence. We wish him nothing but success at Nevada.”
