The Nebraska Cornhuskers have suffered a devastating setback just weeks ahead of the 2025 season, as star running back Trevin Foster has been ruled out for the year with a torn ACL. The junior standout sustained the injury during a non-contact drill in Tuesday’s practice, and an MRI on Wednesday confirmed the worst.
Head coach Matt Rhule addressed the media with a somber tone following the diagnosis.
“We’re heartbroken for Trevin,” Rhule said. “He’s worked incredibly hard this offseason and was poised for a breakout year. His leadership and toughness mean a lot to this team, and we’re going to rally around him.”
Foster, who led the Huskers in rushing yards last season with 1,112 yards and 9 touchdowns, was expected to be the focal point of Nebraska’s offense in 2025. Known for his explosive speed and vision in the open field, he was drawing early attention as a potential All-Big Ten performer and a top NFL prospect.
The injury now forces Nebraska to turn to its young depth chart, with sophomore Cam Wallace and freshman Malik Grant likely to see increased snaps. While both backs have shown promise in spring camp, neither has the experience or production of Foster.
The loss is a major blow to Nebraska’s hopes of contending in the Big Ten this season, especially as the team looked to build momentum after a promising 2024 campaign. However, Rhule emphasized that the team will press forward.
“Injuries are a tough part of this game,” he said. “We believe in our guys. This is a chance for someone to step up.”
Foster is expected to undergo surgery in the coming weeks and begin rehab with hopes of returning strong in 2026.
