Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has announced he will change his jersey number from 0 to 6 for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, honoring his late friend and former Alabama teammate, Khyree Jackson. Jackson tragically passed away in a car accident in July 2024 at the age of 24.
Arnold shared the heartfelt motivation behind this decision on social media, stating, “Because I wanted my brother to live through me.” This tribute reflects the deep bond the two athletes formed during their time together at the University of Alabama.
Jackson, who wore the number 6 jersey during his collegiate career, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His promising professional journey was cut short when he and two former high school teammates, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., were involved in a fatal car crash in Maryland. Authorities reported that their vehicle was struck by another car attempting to change lanes at high speed, with alcohol believed to be a contributing factor.
In response to the tragedy, the Vikings honored Jackson by leaving his locker and jersey number 31 unused for the season. Players wore helmet decals with “KJ,” and staff members donned special pins. The team also contributed $20,000 toward his funeral expenses and paid his remaining $827,000 signing bonus to his estate.
