In a major recruiting victory, the BYU Cougars have secured a commitment from a highly touted prospect who had previously pledged to a Big Ten powerhouse, giving a significant boost to their 2025 recruiting class.
The recruit, four-star linebacker Jalen Matthews from Chandler, Arizona, had originally committed to Michigan State last year but reopened his recruitment in early March after a series of coaching changes in East Lansing. BYU quickly emerged as a top contender, and after an official visit to Provo last week, Matthews announced his commitment to the Cougars via social media.
“After a lot of prayer, thought, and conversations with my family, I’ve decided to commit to Brigham Young University,” Matthews wrote. “This is the place where I feel I can grow spiritually, academically, and athletically.”
Matthews, known for his explosive speed and football IQ, is expected to make an immediate impact on BYU’s defensive unit. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 225 pounds, he brings versatility and strength to a linebacker corps that has seen key departures in recent seasons.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake expressed excitement over the commitment, praising Matthews for both his on-field talent and off-field character.
