Indiana men’s basketball is welcoming back a familiar face, as head coach Darian DeVries announced that former Hoosier standout and NBA veteran Cody Zeller is joining the program as an assistant coach.
Zeller, a native of Washington, Indiana, was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2011 and became one of the most beloved players in recent Hoosier history. During his time in Bloomington, Zeller played a pivotal role in the team’s resurgence under then-head coach Tom Crean. He helped lead the Hoosiers to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2012, and was a cornerstone of the team that reached No. 1 in the national rankings during the 2012–13 season.
After declaring for the NBA Draft in 2013, Zeller was selected fourth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets) and spent over a decade in the league, playing for multiple teams and earning a reputation as a reliable big man known for his work ethic and professionalism.
Head coach Darian DeVries expressed his enthusiasm about Zeller’s return to Bloomington.
“It’s really special to welcome Cody Zeller back to Bloomington as a member of our coaching staff,” DeVries said. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our locker room and on the court.”
Zeller’s addition to the staff brings not only a wealth of playing experience but also a deep understanding of Indiana basketball’s traditions and expectations. His presence is expected to have an immediate impact on player development and recruiting.
