The Seminoles’ coed cheerleading team secured their first-ever Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) national title in 2023, marking a significant milestone for the program.

Posted on May 24, 2025

In a groundbreaking achievement, Florida State University’s coed cheerleading team clinched its first-ever national title at the 2023 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship. Competing in the Division IA Small Coed category, the Seminoles showcased exceptional talent and dedication, marking a significant milestone in the program’s history.

The championship event, held from January 13 to 15 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, brought together over 200 universities from across 44 states. Florida State’s victory stands out as a testament to the team’s relentless pursuit of excellence and their ability to perform under pressure.

This triumph is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first coed national title for the Seminoles. Previously, the university’s cheerleading acclaim came from the all-girl squad’s national championship win at the NCA Nationals in 1997. The 2023 victory not only adds a new chapter to FSU’s cheerleading legacy but also underscores the program’s evolution and growth over the years.

The team, under the guidance of Spirit Group Coordinator Cristina Gold, delivered a performance that combined intricate stunts, synchronized tumbling, and spirited crowd engagement. Their routine captivated both judges and spectators, reflecting months of rigorous training and unwavering commitment.

Coach Gold expressed immense pride in her team’s accomplishment, stating, “I am beyond proud of all of my athletes. They have put in so much work to get here, and to win a national championship makes it all worth it.”

The championship-winning roster included standout athletes such as Kealani Abasial, Kealoha Abasial, Keoki Abasial, Parker Apple, Jonah Cass, Kennedi Chalmers, Sydney Connolly, Harper Coombs, Jay Crump, Juliana Donaldson, Courtney Downing, Camrynn Easterling, Zaria Floyd, Robert Holmes, Taylor Holmes, Mia Johnson, Natalie Joles, Briana Leonard, Brenna Lowrey, Makenna O’Malley, Julia Mann, Kiana Martin, Shelby McMullin, Kamden Nelson, Jaley Rivers, Lexi Savelle, and Jenna Selesnick.

Florida State University’s cheerleading program has long been an integral part of the school’s athletic culture, supporting various sports and enhancing the game-day experience. This national title not only elevates the program’s stature but also serves as an inspiration for future Seminole cheerleaders.

As the team celebrates this historic victory, the university community and fans alike look forward to the continued success and contributions of the Seminoles’ cheerleading squad in the years to come.
