Nebraska Unveils $500 Million Renovation Plan for Memorial Stadium

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Nebraska has announced an ambitious renovation project for Memorial Stadium, with costs expected to exceed $500 million. The massive overhaul aims to modernize the century-old facility while enhancing the game-day experience for fans and improving accessibility throughout the venue.

Originally constructed in 1923, Memorial Stadium has long stood as a symbol of Nebraska football tradition. However, university officials say the time has come for a comprehensive update. “This project will preserve the spirit of Memorial Stadium while transforming it into a world-class facility for future generations,” said Trev Alberts, Nebraska’s athletic director.

The proposed renovations include new seating options, wider concourses, improved restroom and concession facilities, and upgraded premium areas. Notably, the plan also calls for the replacement of bench seating with individual chair-back seats in some sections, a move that will reduce overall capacity but significantly improve fan comfort.

Another major focus of the renovation is enhancing accessibility for fans with disabilities, bringing the stadium into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The project will also add more elevators and escalators to improve circulation within the stadium.

Construction is expected to begin in phases after the 2025 football season and continue through 2026 and 2027, allowing the Huskers to continue playing home games during the renovation. Funding will come from a combination of private donations, athletic department revenue, and potential bond financing.

“This investment is about more than just football,” said University of Nebraska President Ted Carter. “It’s about creating a welcoming environment for all fans and securing the future of our athletic program.”

When complete, the revamped Memorial Stadium is expected to set a new standard for college football venues while preserving the history and legacy of Nebraska football.
