The University of Nebraska has officially announced plans to honor one of its most celebrated football icons with a permanent tribute. A bronze statue of a legendary Cornhuskers quarterback is set to be erected on campus, the athletic department confirmed earlier this week. Construction on the monument is scheduled to begin in fall 2025, with the unveiling anticipated before the start of the 2026 football season.
While the university has yet to formally name the quarterback to be commemorated, sources close to the program strongly suggest it will be Tommie Frazier, the dynamic signal-caller who led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships in 1994 and 1995. Frazier’s legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of Nebraska football, and his influence continues to inspire both players and fans alike.
Athletic Director Trev Alberts emphasized the significance of the tribute in a press release: “This statue is more than just a tribute to individual greatness. It represents the spirit, leadership, and tradition of Nebraska football. It’s a reminder of what it means to wear the ‘N’ on your helmet.”
The statue will be placed outside Memorial Stadium, joining other tributes to Cornhusker legends. The project is being funded through a combination of private donations and alumni contributions, highlighting the widespread support for honoring the program’s historic past.
Fans and former players have expressed overwhelming enthusiasm on social media, with many calling the tribute long overdue. “It’s about time Tommie gets the recognition he deserves in bronze,” one longtime fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
As Nebraska football looks toward a new era under Coach Matt Rhule, the statue will serve as a lasting symbol of the program’s championship legacy and its enduring pride in those who helped build it.
