As the New Orleans Saints continue their search for a new head coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has suggested that former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy could be a logical candidate for the job.
Speaking on ESPN’s NFL Live, Schefter pointed out that McCarthy’s experience, leadership, and offensive expertise align with what the Saints need to turn things around. “Mike McCarthy makes a lot of sense for New Orleans,” Schefter said. “He’s a Super Bowl-winning coach, knows how to develop quarterbacks, and could bring much-needed stability to the franchise.”
The Saints parted ways with Dennis Allen after back-to-back disappointing seasons, missing the playoffs despite a talented roster. With uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position and offensive struggles, McCarthy’s track record could be appealing to Saints’ management. During his tenure in Dallas (2020-2023), McCarthy led the Cowboys to three consecutive playoff appearances and helped quarterback Dak Prescott elevate his game.
McCarthy was dismissed by the Cowboys after a Wild Card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, marking an abrupt end to his tenure. However, he remains a respected coach with a 166-100-2 career record, including his time with the Packers, where he won Super Bowl XLV.
The Saints have reportedly conducted interviews with several candidates, including Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Seattle Seahawks associate head coach Dan Quinn. However, if they seek an experienced coach with a winning pedigree, McCarthy could emerge as a strong contender.
While the Saints haven’t publicly expressed interest in McCarthy, his availability and experience make him a name to watch in the coaching search. With only two NFL teams still looking for a head coach, a decision could come soon.
