As Nebraska football prepares for the 2025 season, one name continues to generate excitement among coaches and fans alike: Emmett Johnson. The redshirt sophomore running back has drawn high praise from the Cornhuskers coaching staff, who believe Johnson is poised to take a major leap and potentially become one of the elite backs in the Big Ten — if not the nation.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield recently called Johnson “one of the most complete backs we’ve had in the room in years,” noting his improved vision, patience, and explosiveness. “He’s taken huge strides in his pass protection and understanding of the playbook,” Satterfield said. “That kind of growth is what separates good players from great ones.”
Head coach Matt Rhule echoed that sentiment during spring camp, emphasizing Johnson’s work ethic and leadership. “He’s put in the time — in the weight room, on the field, in film study. That’s what we want from our guys. He’s setting the tone,” Rhule said.
Johnson, a Minneapolis native and former Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, saw increased playing time last season after injuries depleted the backfield. He finished with 523 rushing yards and three touchdowns, showing flashes of dynamic ability and toughness between the tackles.
Now, with the starting job well within his grasp, Johnson is focused on consistency and raising his game to a new level. “I want to be a guy this team can lean on,” he said. “I know what I’m capable of, and I’m ready to prove it every Saturday.”
With a revamped offensive line and a scheme designed to highlight his strengths, Johnson could be on the verge of a breakout season — and perhaps a shot at becoming one of college football’s premier running backs.
