ESPN Reports – The University of Arkansas has announced plans to unveil a statue of basketball legend Corliss Williamson at Bud Walton Arena, in recognition of his immense contributions to the Razorbacks’ storied basketball program.
Known affectionately as “Big Nasty,” Williamson was a cornerstone of the Razorbacks’ golden era during the early 1990s. The standout forward played a pivotal role in leading Arkansas to the 1994 NCAA Championship—still the only national basketball title in school history. Under head coach Nolan Richardson, Williamson’s physical play, leadership, and tenacity helped define the Razorbacks’ “40 Minutes of Hell” style that overwhelmed opponents.
Over his three-year college career, Williamson earned numerous accolades, including SEC Player of the Year and NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He remains one of the most celebrated athletes in Arkansas sports history and later went on to enjoy a successful NBA career, including winning an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004.
The statue will be placed outside Bud Walton Arena, serving as a lasting tribute to his legacy. It marks a significant moment for Razorback fans and alumni, who continue to revere the 1994 championship team as one of the greatest in collegiate basketball history.
Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek expressed pride in honoring Williamson, stating, “Corliss embodies the heart and soul of Razorback basketball. His impact extends far beyond the court, and this statue is a symbol of our gratitude.”
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to take place during the upcoming basketball season, with members of the 1994 championship team, university officials, and Razorback supporters expected to attend.
The tribute reinforces Arkansas’ commitment to celebrating its rich basketball heritage and inspiring future generations of student-athletes.
